A widow peering into a book shop. Although most of the books are likely endorsed by brick-and-mortar publishing houses, there is no reason why indie authors cannot succeed alongside them today. It just requires a little extra creativity.

Indie Authors Are Thriving—Despite What You May Have Heard

Indie publishing isn’t dead! Yes it is a busy marketplace, but I see success stories all the time.

According to the latest Independent Author Survey:

  • The median self-publishing income for indie authors is $12,749—a 53% increase year on year.
  • The average (mean) self-publishing income is $82,600—a 34% increase year-over-year, showing strong growth in indie author earnings.

I ran a poll to see what authors needed—you answered—and it was a resounding “help me with marketing”.

Yes, there are thousands of books uploaded per day. Yes we have AI books being churned out like sausages.

But, that said, it is not all doom and gloom.

Here’s a look at five powerhouse indie authors who dominated book sales from 2023 to 2025—and the exact marketing strategies they used to achieve their success.

1. Donna Ashworth (Poetry)–The Viral Sensation

Sales: 100,000 copies of To The Women

Earnings (2024):£827,000 (the UK’s bestselling living poet for three years running!)

Marketing Strategy:

  • Leveraged social media virality—her poem History Will Remember When The World Stopped exploded online during COVID-19.
  • Shared poetry through feminist blogs and online communities.
  • Built an engaged audience by offering relatable, shareable content that resonated emotionally.

Lesson: If your content connects with people on a deep level, it will spread organically.

2. Colleen Hoover (Romance)–The Social Media Queen

Sales: Part of the €75M New Romance market (6M copies sold in 2023)

Marketing Strategy:

  • Grew a cult-like fanbase by actively engaging with readers on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook groups.
  • Encouraged word-of-mouth marketing by responding to fans and making them feel part of her journey.
  • Leveraged the power of BookTok, with readers hyping up her books through organic trends and discussions.

Lesson: Your readers are your best marketers—engage with them, and they’ll spread the word for you!

3. Brandon Sanderson (Fantasy)–The Kickstarter King

Sales: His record-breaking Kickstarter campaign raised $41 million!

Marketing Strategy:

  • Used crowdfunding to bypass traditional publishers and fund his books directly through readers.
  • Offered exclusive content and collector’s editions, creating urgency and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out).
  • Built a strong community-driven brand, keeping fans invested with behind-the-scenes updates.

Lesson: If you have a loyal audience, they will pay upfront for your books—even before they’re written!

4. John Locke (Thriller)–The $0.99 eBook Pioneer

Sales: Over 2 million eBooks sold (1.5M from the Donovan Creed series)

Marketing Strategy:

  • Priced his books at $0.99 to attract high-volume sales and climb Amazon’s rankings quickly.
  • Wrote a book about his strategy—How I Sold 1 Million eBooks in Five Months—which doubled as a marketing tool.
  • Focused on email marketing and blog engagement, ensuring a direct connection with readers.

Lesson: Strategic pricing and smart positioning can turn a small investment into a massive payoff!

5. Bella Andre (Romance)–The Indie Innovator

Sales: Unofficially called a “Kindle Phenomenon”

Marketing Strategy:

  • Reclaimed her rights from traditional publishers and re-released her books as self-published eBooks.
  • Mastered direct-to-reader marketing, personally connecting with fans via email lists and social media.
  • Optimized her books for Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited to capitalize on page reads and boost rankings.

Lesson: Owning your rights gives you the freedom to market, sell, and profit on your own terms!

The Takeaway: Your Book’s Success Is In Your Hands!

These indie authors didn’t wait for permission. They harnessed the power of social media, direct sales, and innovative pricing to reach their audience and dominate the charts.

The keys: Creativity, consistency, and clever marketing choices.

If you’re an aspiring author, it’s time to take action:

  • Leverage social media! Engage, build a fanbase, and encourage word-of-mouth marketing.
  • Experiment with pricing strategies. Consider limited-time discounts or subscription models.
  • Build your email list. Don’t rely solely on platforms like Amazon; nurture your own reader community.
  • Think outside the box. Pre-sell, crowdfund, or even bundle your books for added value.
